Strategies for All
Gen X is watching their parents age—many of them without a clear plan for long-term care or what happens when they pass away. At the same time, even their adult children may still need financial, emotional, or housing support. And let’s not forget: they are still trying to secure our own retirements in a world of rising costs and uncertain benefits.
In other words, the squeeze is real.
If you’re a member of Gen X (Generation X), you already know we’re the “forgotten generation.” Born between the mid-1960s and early 1980s, we’re too young to have enjoyed the booming post-war years and too old to get the benefit of the digital-native economy. But lately, another reality is becoming clear: Gen X is stuck in the middle when it comes to family responsibilities.
Why This Series Matters
This blog kicks off a seven-part series called Gen X Conversations. Each installment will tackle the issues that make this generation’s estate and financial planning so complicated, but also so critical. We’ll talk about:
- Aging parents who may not have the resources or legal plans in place for long-term care or end-of-life decisions.
- Adult children who, despite growing older, still lean on parents for help—sometimes out of necessity, sometimes because of poor planning.
- Our own future—how Gen X can balance the demands of today while still preparing for the retirement years that are fast approaching.
It’s not just about money or documents. It’s about peace of mind, avoiding family conflict, and making sure the people we care about aren’t left in chaos.
The Overlooked Generation’s Overlooked Problem
Boomers get the headlines for retiring in record numbers. Millennials get the coverage for reshaping work and technology. Gen Z dominates conversations about social change. Meanwhile, Gen X quietly shoulders responsibility from both ends—and risks being financially and emotionally exhausted in the process.
Estate planning and long-term care planning aren’t abstract issues for us. They’re showing up every day in hospital visits, family group texts, and kitchen table conversations. And without preparation, they can leave devastation in their wake.
What’s Ahead
Over the next eight posts—and in the companion video series—we’ll dive into real stories, practical strategies, and plain-English advice to help Gen X navigate this “sandwich generation” reality.
The goal? To start conversations now, before a crisis forces our hand.
