Unpopular opinion: losing weight can be simple.
Have you heard the saying “energy flows where attention goes”? Personally, it’s one of my favorites and yes, it is absolutely tacked up on my bedroom wall.
It can be so easy to mull over the things that aren’t going well or that we don’t like that we end up leaving no room for our vision, our dreams or the awesome lives we want to create. So, as an experiment, what if instead you focused on what you do want? What if you thought about your ideal life 3 months, 6 months or even a year from now? Are you playing with your children or your grandchildren? Has your health improved? Have you lost those extra pounds? Are you feeling good in your skin?
Now that you have a vision, what if you gave your time, effort and attention to the things you do want for yourself and how to make them a reality? Sound big? Sound scary? I totally get that. There is good news, though. Getting there all boils down to three simple steps. I use this process myself as well as with all of my fitness clients, so I know it works.
Step 1. Identify what you would ideally like to be different about your body. What do you want to have achieved 3 months from now that you haven’t yet?
This step is all about tuning into yourself. How do you want to feel in your body? What do you want to be able to do more efficiently? How do you want to look? What does prioritizing your health do for your confidence? Your career? Your relationships?
Step 2. Work backwards from that goal to where you are now. These steps become your roadmap.
To make your ideal image of yourself your reality, what do you need to do? Do you need to workout? Do you need to dial in your nutrition? Do you need to improve your daily habits? Is your roadmap clear or do you need to hire a coach?
Step 2 is the most difficult and typically where most people get stuck. A lot of people know what they want, they just don’t know how to get there, so they try anything and everything that’s suggested to them. This ‘Guess and Test method’ will work for a small percentage of the population, but most people get confused, frustrated and ultimately wind up back at square one. And I know this because for years, that was me. I tried a million and one things that had worked for someone else but were nothing near what my body needed. Even now a ‘weight loss’ google search will bring up hundreds of different diets and workouts that all seem to contradict each other – no wonder it’s confusing.
Step 3. Focus in on that roadmap and moving forward, one step at a time.
With any fitness goal you definitely won’t get there overnight, and it’s not one big leap that’ll do it. It’s seemingly small choices every day. It’s choosing to do a workout even though you’re feeling a little tired. It’s choosing to add some veggies to your grocery bag. It’s choosing to believe that you deserve to look and feel exactly how you want to.
Ultimately, life’s much too short to not be living the life you want and that 100% includes how you look and feel in your body.
So, if you want to lose weight, become more mobile, increase your strength and run after those little ones, it’s completely possible.
Just remember, energy flows where attention goes.
